How to Transfer Files to Your iPhone Using Fugu (Mac)

These are instructions on how to transfer files to your iPhone using Fugu. To follow this tutorial you need to have a jailbroken iPhone with SSH installed. You can find instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone here.

Step One
First we must obtain the IP Address of the iPhone. To do this press the Settings button on your Springboard.

Step Two
Press to select Wi-Fi from the Settings Menu

Step Three
Make sure you are connected to a wireless network then press the circular blue arrow button

Step Four
Take note of your IP address from the Wi-Fi details screen

Step Five
Make sure you are on the same wireless network as your iPhone and launch Fugu by clicking its icon in the dock or in your Applications folder. If you do not have Fugu installed you can download it from here

Step Six
Once Fugu opens enter your iPhone's IP Address into the Connect to: field. Then enter root as your iPhone username and click the Connect button.

Step Seven
You will be asked to input a password. Enter alpine as the password and click the Authenticatebutton.

Step Eight
Fugu will then log you into your iPhone. You will be placed in the /private/var/root directory.

Step Nine
To get to the root folder of the iPhone you can select / from the dropdown on the right side of the window. From here you can access all the folders on your iPhone for example the Applicationsfolder.

Step Ten
To transfer a file to the iPhone simply locate your local (on your computer) file using the left pane. Then navigate to the desired location in the right pane. Drag the file from the left pane to the right pane to copy the file to your iPhone.

Google Earth iOS Update Adds Bike Routes, Earth Gallery And More

Now you can access earthquake info, bike routes and lots more from within Google Earth ittself

Google Earth just got what turns out to be rather a big update. On paper it seems like nothing more than a few interface tweaks and the ability to open KML and KMZ files linked from Safari, but one new bullet point — “Touring support: load tours from the Earth Gallery or from mountain layer” — turns the map app into something entirely different.

First, V6.2.0 does have few other changes and fixes. The aforementioned ability to launch KML and KMZ files in Google Earth when clicked in the browser is actually very useful, letting you browse many travel and outdoor sites for routes and see them in a native app. Also, tapping on the screen to zoom now zooms in on the spot you tapped instead of the center of the screen.

But it’s the Earth Gallery which stands out. You launch it from the wrench at the top of the screen, and you get a sheet which lets you search for anything in the gallery. This includes travel tips, but also route-finding websites.

The Wikiloc layer is an amazing resource for bikes and hikers

One of these is Wikiloc, a wiki for sharing GPS routes. I use it to search for places to tour on my bike, or routes that will keep me away from major roads. With the new Google Earth you can not only open these routes directly in the app, but they are actually overlaid in a new layer right there in the app.

It’s super-neat. Activate the layer and the current map gets a lot of little icons showing hiking or cycling routes. Tap one, and it gives an overview of the route, with distance, elevation and so on. Tap again to show the route on the map as a thin white line. You can’t do a fly through like you can in the desktop version, but it’s a great way to fond a route when you’re out and about.

As ever, Google Earth is free. If you have any interest in the outdoors whatsoever, you should be downloading it for your iPhone or iPad right now.

How iTunes Could Kill Windows 8 Tablets

It seems unlikely you'll ever see an iTunes icon here.

Despite being totally dedicated to Mac OS X right now, I can’t help but get excited about Windows 8. Having enjoyed the Metro UI experience with Windows Phone, I can’t wait to try it out on a tablet. And I know a lot of users feel the same way. But one thing that could put many of them off Windows 8 slates is the lack of iTunes.

Microsoft knows this, and it knows it’s a real problem that could kill Windows 8 tablets before they’ve even hit the market in the minds of many consumers.

For Microsoft to make Windows 8 a success, it’ll need the support of its biggest rival: Apple. A huge portion of Windows users use iOS devices that they sync with their PCs, and the iTunes Store for purchasing music, movies, TV shows, and apps. Of course, they need iTunes to do that.

The problem is, Windows 8 tablets run a touch-friendly version of the operating system built for ARM processors that exclusively uses the Metro user interface. It’s not like the PC version, which allows you to switch between the Metro and traditional Windows UIs. And because of this, Microsoft is encouraging developers to adapt their applications for the Metro UI.

There’s a good chance that Apple — a company famous for playing by its own rules — will decide it doesn’t want to play ball. And if that turns out to be the case, it’s one reason why consumers may decide not to adopt a Windows 8 tablet.

Rick Sherland, an analyst with Nomura Securities, believes “the incentive is for Apple not to do this.”

“If I can’t get iTunes on [a Windows 8 on ARM tablet],” Sherland continued, “that’s a big deal for me.”

Of course, Windows 8 does come with its own music app, which users could transfer all of their content to. But it’s not iTunes, and it won’t sync with iOS devices.

This is a problem Microsoft has been thinking about, according to Jay Greene over at CNET. Although the company declined to comment on the matter, its CEO, Steve Ballmer, revealed last year that Microsoft would “welcome Metro-style application from Apple in the iTunes case.”

“I don’t know what we’d see there,” Ballmer said. “But we’d certainly welcome those.”

Apple also declined to comment, CNET reports.

Do you think Apple will adapt iTunes for the Metro UI? And would a lack of iTunes encourage you to avoid Windows 8 tablets?

iOS 5.1 Has Been Jailbroken

You just can’t keep the Dev Team down. Just hours after Apple officially released iOS 5.1, it’s already been jailbroken. But as usual with these 0-day jailbreaks, there are some caveats.

The iPhone Dev Team has just announced that they have updated their popular Redsn0w jailbreak tool to allow people to run unsigned code on their iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. But there are some drawbacks.

First of all, if you’ve got an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, you need not apply. The A5′s security against jailbreaking is a lot beefier than previous devices (expect this trend to continue with the A5X) and Redsn0w can’t crack it.

Secondly, this is a tethered jailbreak, meaning that every time you power off your device, you need to connect your device to a computer to boot it up again if you want it in jailbroken state. A little inconvenient, but not the end of the world.

Look for our official jailbreak tutorial later today, but in the meantime, you can download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 here, and our old tutorial on jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 for Redsn0w should be roughly compatible with the new update. Best of luck!

Add Awesome Unlock Animations To Your iOS Device With iUnlock Tweak [Jailbreak]

Click here to see Cult of Mac's full jailbreak archives!

Bored of your iPhone’s default unlock animation? I was after about three minutes. But thanks to a new jailbreak tweak called iUnlock, you can customize your unlock animation yourself with awesome effects and sounds.

You can download iUnlock now from Cydia’s BigBoss repo. It’s priced at $1.99, but there’s a three-day trial which allows you to test the tweak yourself, and I think you’ll agree it’s well worth its price tag.

It features a lost list of animations and sounds that allow you to spice up your lock screen animation with all sorts of fancy effects. Our friends over at iDownloadBlog have put together a video of iUnlock in action:

Looks good, doesn’t it?

To download iUnlock, you will, of course, need a jailbroken device running iOS 5. It’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Rumor: Next month, Siri should speak Russian, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese

Siri, an AI-driven virtual assistant launched last October as an iPhone 4S exclusive, currently speaks English (United States, United Kingdom, Australia), French and German languages. The official Siri FAQ from the onset made it clear that “In 2012, Siri will support additional languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian, and Spanish”.

Last December, 9to5Mac pointed at job openings indicating possible Siri enhancements, including a prettier interface and a Siri API to extend her functionality to third-party iOS programs. We also discovered this LinkedIn profile belonging to Apple’s language technologies engineer Chen Zhang which proves Apple’s been at work completing Siri support for the Chinese market. According to today’s article by Tech Asia, Mandarin-only support for the Chinese language could be released as early as next month. Moreover…

That piece also states that Apple will teach Siri to speak Japanese and Russian. If the article is to be believed, support for Chinese will be limited, at least initially:

The rumor also contends that the Chinese version will only support the standard Mandarin (aka: putonghua) Chinese, which would leave out Cantonese-speaking people, as well as some Taiwan folk who effectively speak in a different dialect. Plus, it alleges that Japanese and Russian will arrive next month as well.

Though Siri retained its beta label and is well-known for occasionally taking extended coffee breaks, it’s been pretty popular with users and Apple’s marketing positions it as the differentiating feature of the iPhone 4S. According to the answer-engine Wolfram Alpha (a Siri content partner) queries originating from Siri users represent a quarter of all Wolfram Alpha queries.

Apple Intern Worked On ‘Secret’ Project Porting Mac OS X To ARM

Mac OS X on iPad

While Apple has previously dismissed the idea of porting its entire Mac OS X operating system to ARM-powered mobile devices, the Cupertino company has at least been working on it. That’s according to one intern who worked with Apple’s Platform Technologies Group — a subdivision of the CoreOS department — for four months back in 2010. But does it really mean anything?

Tristan Schaap wrote a thesis on his time at Apple shortly after he left the company in 2010, but he was unable to publish it until August 16 2011, when an embargo protecting the sensitive subject matter was lifted. It’s now available for anyone to read, and it details Apple’s work on porting its Snow Leopard desktop operating system to devices powered by ARM processors.

iMore points to this particular section of Schaap’s report:

The goal of this project is to get Darwin into a workable state on the MV88F6281 processor so that other teams can continue their work on this platform. The project has three major milestones:

  1. Getting the buildsystem into shape, so that it can build the kernel and kexts.
  2. Building and booting the kernel into single user mode.
  3. Booting the system into multi-user mode.

iMore notes that since Apple started working on this “secret” project, it has shipped new MacBook Airs and a new iPad; neither of which show any sign of Mac OS X on ARM. It’s unclear if the project is ongoing at Apple’s Cupertino campus or whether it has now been dropped. But Schaap is now a full-time employee at Apple, working as a CoreOS engineer.

So what does Schaap’s thesis suggest? Well, many have jumped to the conclusion that it means Apple was — and could still be — planning to port Mac OS X to a device like the iPad. But we’re skeptical of that. After all, we already know that the company is so secretive that new employees must work on “fake” products until they can be trusted, so why would they allow an intern to work on a project as big as bringing Mac OS X to the iPad?

Furthermore, I think it’s safe to assume if this thesis revealed any details about Apple’s future plans, Schaap would no longer be an Apple employee. What’s included in his report must now be largely insignificant.

How The iPhone Saves Money For Businesses (And Why Android Can’t)

A big challenge for businesses and organizations is cost management, particularly in the current economic climate. Many companies are trying to maximise their budgets – one of the big factors pushing the BYOD trend. Where BYOD isn’t feasible, however, businesses may still have the need to support mobile professionals – and need to do so as cost effectively as possible.

Despite the common presumption that Apple solutions are more expensive, the iPhone offers companies unique advantages when it comes to keeping costs down – and those advantages aren’t likely to be found in Android devices.

These advantages boil down to Apple’s consistency in its products. With the exception of storage capacities and color, Apple only makes a single iPhone 4S model. That model may be locked to a specific carrier, but the hardware and OS is the same on every iPhone 4S in the world.

That consistency of iOS continues through other models like the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS – no different skins from manufacturers and no customizations or apps installed by carriers. That’s a great feature for consumers, but it also offers two important cost management factors for companies that opt to be iPhone-specific.

First is the cost of internal app development. Obviously, any single platform is going to be easier to develop for than a mix of platforms. iOS’s consistency, however, means that all devices will be running the same OS (since carriers and manufacturers don’t interfere with the iOS development and release cycle). It also means the same or very similar hardware across devices. That cuts down on the time and expense needed to develop and test apps as well as to troubleshoot them. It can also increase app quality because developers don’t have to meet a lowest common denominator when it comes to the installed OS base as would be needed when it comes to Android.

Second, and less obvious, is that the freedom from carrier-specific models, skins, or features makes the iPhone very portable. A Verizon iPhone looks and functions the same as a Sprint iPhone. An AT&T iPhone in the U.S. looks and acts the same as a Rogers iPhone in Canada.

The advantage here isn’t just picking a preferred carrier – it allows businesses to cherry pick carriers for best costs and the greatest flexibility. For staff in a New York office, all carriers may be equal, but one might give a better business data plan. Staff in a midwest office, however, may need to choose a specific carrier in order to get coverage at their location. Both offices still get identical devices, the same internal apps, and the same managed security features thanks to the same mobile device management (MDM) vendor.

That flexibility comes at essentially no overhead and it becomes particularly attractive for companies that span multiple countries.

The one challenge is investigating the best options for plans between carriers for your usage. This can seem like a herculean task because it involves digging through useage and experience data and then negotiating with one or more carriers. The good news is that there are consulting companies out there that specialize in mobile and terrestrial cost management. Often these companies can in other services like choosing and implementing MDM solutions and developing a unified communications strategy.

What Happens When You Drop Your iPhone [Humor]

You know that moment when your iPhone slips out of your hands and begins its slow tumble to the ground? Time slows down, as it does in the milliseconds before any horrific accident, and you absolutely freeze with a sort of full-body shudder of anticipation at the shattered glass screen you just know will be the end result of its 32 feet per second per second fall towards the concrete.

In a recent episode of Fred Armise and Carrie Brownstein’s Portlandia, they did a skit that documents the internal monologue of such a reverie. The end’s a bit surreal (and a little weak), but as an iPhone owner myself, I can relate. Looks like it’s time for Brownstein to buy a bumper.

Siri + Magic + Hot Wild Girls + Doritos = This Year’s Funniest Super Bowl Commercial [Humor / Video]

As part of its annual promotion to get more Americans to cram nacho cheese-flavored asbestos triangles down their gob during halftime, Doritos throws a Crash The Super Bowl contest where they invite fans to make their own commercials. Win the contest and your winning ad gets aired during the Super Bowl.

I don’t usually pay attention to stuff like this, but this entry for the contest is just wonderful. It portrays Siri (or a Siri-like) as a magical genie in a smartphone capable of automatically beaming bags full of Doritos, a festive sombrero or even three hot, bikini-clad girls into a bro’s apartment at just a long press of the home button, no questions asked.

The only problem? In Dorito’s land, Siri’s speech-to-text transcription abilities have a couple of small auditory processing kinks to work out. The result? A guy’s request for hot wild girls leads to him being torn apart by… well, you’ve got to see it for yourself. Brilliant.

Celeste Tweak Get's Updated To Support iOS Devices Running On iOS 5.0.1

Well here's some good news for all iPhone users who are running their jailbroken devices on iOS 5.0.1, today we would like to tell you that Celeste the popular app get's updated to support devices running on 5.0.1, the tweak is very good that offers Bluetooth from your iPhone to any other device and other more features:

For those guys who haven't heard about Celeste, it is a very popular and useful app that  this tweak, which for convenience we will call simply "Heavenly" is the only package available in Cydia that allows you to send and receive files via Bluetooth seamlessly with IOS. One of the limitations of the iPhone (and Apple mobile devices in general) is in fact not allow the exchange of data using this (although for some obsolete) technology.

Now we just have to wait for new developments directly from the team. Over the months we have learned that these developers are among the most rapid updating of its tweaks, but certainly their quality and functionality are well above the average of the programs available through Cydia.

How To Jailbreak Your iPad 2 On iOS 5 The Right Way

The untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 has finally been released. After months of waiting, you can download the Chronic Dev Team’s free Absinthe Mac tool to jailbreak your iPad 2 in a matter of seconds.

We’ll show you how to jailbreak your iPad 2 running iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1the right way in this guide.

Step 1: Make sure you have your SHSH blobs backed up using the free TinyUmbrella app. It’s available on both Windows and Mac. Saving your SHSH blobs is essential for downgrading back to your previous iOS firmware version if something should go wrong during the jailbreak process. Basically, if you don’t complete this step, you could end up — worst case scenario — with a bricked iPad. Just download TinyUmbrella at the official site, install the app, open it up and click Save SHSH. Done!

Step 2: Back up your iPad 2 4S to either iTunes or iCloud before you go any farther. In iTunes, you do this by right-clicking on your iPad 2 under the “Devices” window and selecting Back Up. You want to make sure you have a recent setup to restore to if something goes wrong. While jailbreaking isn’t that dangerous, you can never be too careful.

Step 3: Download the free Absinthe jailbreak tool for Mac. (A Windows version will be available soon.) You can download Absinthe from the Greenpois0n website or through this direct download link. Unzip the file in a folder on your hard drive.

Step 4: Connect your iPad 2 to your Mac via a USB cable and open Absinthe.

Step 5: Click “Jailbreak” and let Absinthe do its thing. It may take a little while. Your iPad 2 should say “Restoring in Progress.” Make sure not to disconnect your 4S or quit Absinthe while this process is happening.

Step 6: Once completed, you will be taken to your iPad 2′s Home screen. Find the newly-installed Absinthe icon and tap it. You’ll be taken to the Greenpois0n website and code will be run to trigger a reboot of your iPad 2. When you’ve successfully rebooted, the Absinthe icon will be replaced with the one and only Cydia.

Congrats! You now have an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak for your iPad 2!

If you’re having problems getting past Step 6, try this fix.

Corona A5 jailbreak nearly ready to pop!

Ever since the December release of @pod2g’s “corona” untether for iOS 5.x on A4 and earlier devices, all eyes have been on the attempts to extend it to the A5 devices: the iPhone4S and iPad2.  Due to the combined efforts of @pod2g and members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team, we’re nearly ready for a general release!  All technical hurdles dealing with the underlying technique have been overcome, and it’s now all about making the jailbreak as bug free as possible.

On his blog, @pod2g playfully nicknamed the combined effort a “dream team”.  It’s an ironic name, because the past few weeks have left everyone involved with very little sleep and the opportunity to dream :) But we’re now near the final stages of testing the public version of the jailbreak.  Please allow time to clean up any remaining bugs in the jailbreak clients.

Jailbreak programs:

To be as flexible as possible, the A5 version of the corona jailbreak will take multiple forms:

  • Chronic Dev have incorporated the overall flow into a GUI that runs on your Mac or PC.  The goal is for the GUI to be enough for most cases.
  • iPhone Dev have also incorporated the exact same flow into an alternative command-line interface (CLI). This will allow us to help users through individual steps of the jailbreak manually, to both help the user and help improve the overall flow.  Although the CLI will also allow the user to perform the entire jailbreak from beginning to end, we anticipate it will be more useful in debugging the occasional errors.  The CLI currently has over 20 individual options (in addition to the single “jailbreak” option) that should be useful during debug after the GUI release.
  • Once all the bugs in the flow are worked out, we’ll also incorporate it into the redsn0w GUI (but still leave the CLI freely available too).  In order to maximize the chances of the jailbreak working for everyone, the redsn0w GUI will use native Apple iTunes libraries — this technique is slightly different than how the Chronic Dev GUI handles communications, and should provide nice combined coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.

Paypal Contributions:

Because there were so many different people and teams involved in the A5 corona release, we all felt the most equitable approach to any Paypal contributions should involve a single shared account.  If you do feel the desire to contribute to the “dream team” Paypal account, it will be distributed to the members according to internally agreed-upon proportions :) (Please refer to this blog post for that specific http://is.gd/39YMWg link, to avoid frauds!)  The same link will be on both the Chronic Dev and iPhone Dev versions of the GUI.  This method seemed like the fairest to everyone involved!

Firmware:

The supported firmware versions will be:

  • iPhone4S: 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
  • iPad2: 5.0.1 (9A405)

iPhone4S owners looking to maximize their chances of achieving an eventual software-based carrier unlock should be staying at 5.0. Everyone else should be at 5.0.1.  If you’re an iPhone4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the BB by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open.

Support:

The overall flow used by the GUI and CLI to inject the A5 corona jailbreak has never been done before, and there may be unforeseen problems once it’s released to the public.  It’s very important for you to sync your data, photos, and music before attempting any version of this jailbreak.  We’ll be watching the comments section below for signs of any widespread problems, but please be aware that you jailbreak at your own risk!

When:

As mentioned at the start of this post: when testing has shown most of the bugs have been fixed!

Latest Beta Hints At Facebook Integration For iOS 5

Those who are trawling through the source code of Apple’s latest iOS 5.1 beta have discovered references to the company’s upcoming iPad 3, and more interestingly, hints that Facebook integration could be making its way to iOS to accompany Twitter.

With the iPad 3 set to make its debut within the next few months, it’s hardly surprising that the new device is popping up in the iOS 5 software. It’s J1AP and J2AP code-names — presumably related to the Wi-Fi and 3G models of the device — have been mentioned within the latest beta, putting to bed any worries you may have had about Apple discounting the device.

But what’s more surprising is that the beta also hints at future Facebook integration. The iOS 5 firmware already features Twitter integration, and Facebook integration has been the subject of rumors for some time — with previous reports claiming the feature was set to make its debut in iOS 4 before being dropped when an agreement could not be reached between Apple and the social network.

It seems, however, the two companies may have settled their differences. In iOS 5.1, users currently have the option to add Facebook profile information to their contact cards, in much the same way you can currently add Twitter usernames.

Whether or not this is indeed Facebook integration or just a way in which you can add handy links to Facebook profiles remains to be seen. Hopefully all will become clear with the release of iOS 5.1.

Daily Tip: Easily Know Your Speed Of Your iPhone's Data Connection

So you have been using your iPhone for a long time ? Maybe you think it's time to check out the speed of your iPhone's data connection and how fast your internet is on your home Wi-Fi network, well today we would like to introduce for you a free speed test app you can perform a quick and simple test that will tell you your download and your upload speeds on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

In order to test your iPhone speed you will have to open App Store from your iPhone and download Speedtest.net app which is available for free to all iOS devices and please make sure that the network you’re connected to is the one you would like to test the speed of. And if you’re checking a 3G connection, it’s best to turn Wi-Fi off.
After you download the app on your iPhone you can go to the app "Settings" and choose the type of the test you want to make for your iPhone:
Everything can be done from the app "Settings" at the bottom of the app to specify whether you’d like to see results in Kbps, Mbps, or KB/s; and how you’d like your results to be sorted.
