We don’t have to tell you that there are a ton of amazing apps on the App Store, but how much profit do those apps make? We all know Angry Birds is raking in the money, but what about the others guys? Take Camera+ for instance. 18 months ago TapTapTap released Camera+ and have been enjoying consistent success ever since. On average, a copy of Camera+ is sold approximately every 3 seconds. Recent sales numbers released by the company show that the app has earned a grand total of $5,125,844 to date….that’s after Apple got their 30% cut.
The surprising thing about Camera+ is that the developers have been able to not just sustain initial growth, but actually triple revenues over the last 6 months without releasing any major updates. The release of the iPhone 4S and the holiday season provided a large boost to recent sales figures, but one of the main reasons Camera+ is so successful is word of mouth. By creating one of the best camera apps that provides great functionality with ease-of-use, iPhone users are more likely to recommend the app to their friends who are just buying an iPhone for the first time which means Camera+ has consistently ranked in the Top 10 since early September.
“What’s the most surprising thing about all these stats [is] that Camera+ has achieved all this and has never ranked #1 in either the US Top Paid or Top Grossing charts.”
It’s hard to imagine that Camera+’s current rate of growth will be sustainable for years to come, however, the app and its developers serve as a great model of what is needed for small teams to compete on the App Store and make some serious coin in the process.
